My name
is Legoadi Princess Ramabele, I am a 19 year old UWC graduate from South
Africa.
In 2014 I went through
a UWC selection process in the offices of Star for life.
Less confident as I
was, little did I know that this was the beginning of a new beautiful journey.
I thought I was not good enough since I came from the dusty streets of Soweto,
a place called home. At the back of my head I was thinking “why would they
select someone with very primitive English and who was taught in local schools
of Soweto, why would someone even want to invest their money in a girl that
possess less than one third of the knowledge that the world around her
contains”, this wasn’t me trying to be self-critical, but this was me trying to
face reality, reality defined by growing up in a disadvantaged background where
I was taught that kids in the cities has more potential than me as a local kid
and that boys will always be superior than girls. On that day the holders of
Star for life saw something in me, something that even today I still don’t know
what it is. I guess they saw potential and ambition and how calm I was. Because
my interview was a funny one if you ask me, as myself, less prepared I got
there and I defined myself as I knew myself, not as I had written down to
present myself as a perfect candidate. I let them see me beneath my perfections
and they still selected me, even today I still don’t know how but I know I will
forever be grateful to them. As I moved to Armenia, they paid my flight tickets
and gave me allowance, they made everything possible for me. They opened all
the doors for me towards success, it was now all up to me to make it happen, to
make everything possible for myself and for them. During the two years in UWC
Dilijan, I developed into a strong, bold and wise woman. I faced all sort of
challenges but I still made it through. Star for life supported me throughout
the two years of my UWC and believed in me. It was not only about them paying
for my education, it was the amount of faith that they had in me that pushed me
through, they taught me that everybody dies, but not everybody lives, that in
life we don’t regret the things we did, but rather things we didn’t do and the
dreams we didn’t pursue. And with them I was living the dream that was once a
fantasy. My coach Noluthando Khoza (from Start for life) became my mentor as I
experienced a few challenges along the way, I felt content and safe knowing she
is just a phone call away and always willing to help. This made me realise that
Star for life does not only give you financial support but it also offers
emotional and psychological support through their employees that works and life
coaches. My vocabulary improved, I had new ideologies that enabled me to think
outside of the box that I was raised in, I had new bigger and better dreams and
I had turned into a new ambassador to encourage women and young girls to fight
for what they believed in and to encourage them to know that no one is born
stupid and that we are all good in one way or another. As I graduate from UWC
and further my studies in the United States of America. I will remember one thing
in life; That It was Star for life that took me out of the dusty streets of
Soweto (a place called home) and gave me hope and courage to fight for what I
believe in, it was them who had faith me, it was them who heard the loud
suppressed voice from within and it was them that granted me the opportunity to
spread my wings and for that I will live to give back to both my community and
Star for life. To all the members of star for life’ Thank you very much for
giving me this opportunity, this is the most valuable gift that anyone has ever
given me, it isn’t every day that one gets a gift of education, knowledge and
success. Like Nelson Mandela said “Education is the most powerful weapon which
you can use to change the world.” And you have given me that weapon.
